Treasures are being unearthed as museum staff and volunteers start to review more than 17,000 objects from the stores.
As part of the Newton's Place project to create a new museum and community space in the former St Leonard's Church, a review of the objects in the museum stores has begun. Staff and volunteers are working with the museum designers to create display themes for the new museum.
The larger space means that many objects will be brought from the stores and displayed for the very first time. Stories associated with the objects are also being researched. The new galleries will be developed over the coming months, but initial work has produced some very exciting finds. The photographs show just two of the costumes currently in the stores (from a total of 12 complete outfits), a small sample of Dr Mapleton's extensive butterfly collection, and a Bakelite radio.
